Wenscott Lane speed bumps modified

NORTH PROVIDENCE - The Wenscott Lane speed bumps got cut down to size Monday when the town's paving contractor ground out the approaches to provide a less jarring ride.

Drivers who use the shortcut that Wenscott Lane provides from Mineral Spring Avenue to Douglas Pike howled after Mayor Charles A. Lombardi ordered the bumps installed in response to neighbors' complaints about speeding cars.

Although Lombardi contended that the only people complaining were the ones the speed bumps are there to discourage, he recently observed some drivers might have a legitimate complaint about the angle of the bumps.

"Smaller cars with spoilers under the bumper are scraping the pavement when they go over," Lombardi said. "I don't want anyone to damage their car. So, I'm having them trim off the sides of the speed bumps and repave them to eliminate the problem."

Workmen for A. Miozzi started the work Monday morning and hoped to finish by the afternoon.

A police detail was assigned to control the steady flow of traffic that continued on the roadway.

"The speed bumps are staying there," Lombardi said. "They curtail speed and traffic."

Neighbors attended a recent council meeting to endorse the installation of the speed bumps, but agreed to modifications.
